Overview

Quality control is where a specification either holds or quietly fails. Horema has provided continuous QA/QC on Egyptian construction projects for four decades, from refinery and power station builds to ports, runways and national housing programmes.

The service spans the whole chain: approving source materials before they arrive, verifying mixes and compaction during placement, and testing hardened elements afterwards where acceptance or investigation demands it. Contractors and supervising consultants get a single accountable source of materials data rather than results scattered across several suppliers.

At the Midor refinery this extended into full-time construction QA/QC, verifying concrete, aggregates and compacted fill against specification throughout the build — the mode of working that suits industrial projects where non-conformance found late is measured in weeks of programme.

Concrete compressive strength — cubes & cylinders

BS EN 12390-3 · ASTM C39 · ASTM C31

Sampling, casting, curing and crushing of concrete specimens at specified ages, with results assessed against characteristic strength and the specification's acceptance criteria.

Fresh concrete testing

ASTM C143 (slump) · ASTM C231 (air) · ASTM C138 (density)

Slump, air content, temperature and density measured at the point of placement, catching mix and workability problems while the concrete can still be rejected.

Core extraction & testing

ASTM C42 · BS EN 12504-1

Cores cut from hardened elements for compressive strength assessment where cube results are disputed, records are incomplete, or existing structures are being assessed.

Non-destructive concrete testing

Rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity surveys for uniformity assessment, defect screening and structural appraisal without cutting the element.

Common questions

What engineers ask us about materials testing

What concrete tests are required for construction acceptance?

Fresh concrete is checked at placement for slump, temperature and often air content and density. Specimens — cubes to BS EN 12390-3 or cylinders to ASTM C39 — are cast, cured and crushed at specified ages, typically 7 and 28 days, and assessed against the characteristic strength and the acceptance rules in the project specification. Where results are disputed or records incomplete, cores to ASTM C42 provide direct evidence from the element itself.

When is core testing used instead of cube testing?

Cores are cut when cube results fall short of specification, when curing or sampling records are questionable, when an existing structure is being assessed, or when the in-place strength of a specific element must be established. Core results require correction for length-to-diameter ratio and are interpreted differently from cube results.

What aggregate tests qualify a source for use?

Source approval typically covers gradation, specific gravity and absorption, Los Angeles abrasion for mechanical durability, soundness for weathering resistance, flakiness and elongation for shape, and clay, silt and organic content for cleanliness. Chemical screening is added where the aggregate will be used in aggressive exposure conditions.
